Heritage experts have demanded tougher penalties for developers who brazenly knock down historic buildings, after the unlawful demolition on the weekend of a Carlton pub that was built in 1857.

The Corkman Irish Pub, previously known as the Carlton Inn, was built 159 years ago and, until Sunday, stood at the corner of Leicester and Pelham streets.

Residents on Saturday night rang Melbourne City Council to complain about demolition noise from the pub, which the previous week had been partially burnt by fire.

By the time council inspectors arrived, the building had been largely demolished.

Pollster Gary Morgan, who is running for Lord Mayor in council elections finishing this week, said the owners had "knowingly" broken the law.

"If I was elected mayor, I would put those people in jail. If they didn't get a conviction the first time, I would try a second time," he said.

Voting on our city's future by Herald-Sun, October 18, 2016

DEMOCRACY will deliver its verdict this weekend to help shape the future of Melbourne and Victoria.

While many people place less scrutiny on local government than they do to state and federal levels, the community issues of the third tier impact lives significantly and effective representation is vital.

No more so than in the City of Melbourne where, under the pressures of population growth, council and its leadership must set an exciting and achievable vision for the state capital well into the 21st century.

With its $500 million budget, council must develop a framework to help attract and secure new commercial opportunities, build on Melbourne as Australia’s sporting, events and cultural capital, and continue to lead tourism and education sectors in a competitive market.

It's time to dump the lord mayoral limousine and take public transport, get a cab or walk, every candidate in contention to lead Melbourne City Council has said – except incumbent Robert Doyle.

And one of Cr Doyle's key opponents at this month's election has also demanded the state government limit Melbourne's popularly elected lord mayor to two terms.

Cr Doyle is running for a third term – if he wins he will have spent 12 years in the job.

Councillor Ken Ong has been the council's planning chair, and is now running for lord mayor. Cr Ong said that, if he won, he would dump the mayoral driver and walk.

Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle to take on ‘unholy alliance’ of opponents by John Masanauskas, Herald-Sun, September 26, 2016

LORD Mayor Robert Doyle was in the fight of his political life after an “unholy alliance” of opponents ganged up against him for next month’s city council election, a Doyle team member has claimed.

Nick Reece, an academic and former ALP staffer, also warned that Melbourne could return to the days of “clown hall” if Cr Doyle was defeated.

But pollster Gary Morgan, who is making another bid for the lord mayoralty, said this was nonsense and Cr Doyle was not a suitable person for the job.

Queen Victoria Market a key election issue in race for Melbourne Lord Mayor by Stephanie Chalkley-Rhoden, News ABC, September 23, 2016

The future of the Queen Victoria Market and wider redevelopment in Melbourne's CBD is shaping as a critical issue in the race for Lord Mayor, with many traders still unconvinced about the current plan for the site's renewal.

The 130-year-old market is set to undergo a significant $250 million makeover that has divided opinions among traders, government and shoppers.

The plan will see the creation of an underground car park, underground trader facilities and a revamp of the iconic sheds.

The surrounding area is also an issue of contention as more and more high-density and apartment building developments are approved.
